Seismic Analysis of Baffle-Reinforced Elevated Storage Tank Using Finite Element Method

The sloshing phenomenon is an important field of fluid dynamics in liquid storage tanks under earthquake excitation. When the frequency gets close to tank’s natural frequency, resulting resonance could lead instability and even damage structures, followed by catastrophic economic losses environmental damages. As passive control devices, baffles are a place for energy dissipation. This study uses annular horizontal evaluate baffles’ relative effectiveness on elevated tanks’ dynamic response. analysis results compared with those no baffles. flexible rigid tank examined here, where half height filled liquid. structural interaction between liquid, (horizontal annular) baffle, affected seismic action investigated using Abaqus software. confirm that baffles, maximum base shear force decreases as much 26.43% 31.90%, respectively, hydrodynamic pressure reduction 50.1%.
